Share a file

Add people by email or turn on a link, and choose whether they can view, comment or edit.

On this page

Every file has one link. Who can open it, and what they can do, is set in the share dialog.

Open the share dialog

Select Share in the app’s top bar, or choose Share from the file’s ⋯ menu in Drive. The dialog has two tabs: Share and Publish.

Add people

  1. Under Add people by email, enter one or more email addresses.
  2. Choose their role:
    • Viewer: can open and view it.
    • Commenter: can view it and add comments.
    • Editor: can also change it.
  3. Add them. Select Email the link to send it from your own email.

People you add sign in with that email to open the file. Change a role, or choose Remove access, from the list under People with access.

Under General access, choose:

  • Restricted: only people with access can open the link.
  • Anyone with the link: anyone can open it, as a Viewer, Commenter or Editor. Commenting and editing need them to sign in; signed out, they can view.

Then select Copy link.

Your workspace

Everyone in your workspace can already open and edit the workspace’s files, and only workspace members can change who has access. People outside it see what their role allows: viewers get a read-only page and never the editor.
